The Journey and Back Story
>> Healthcare Current State
I’ve lived the good, bad, and ugly of healthcare.
As the authority managing many aspects of healthcare in many leadership roles since 1986 I’ve learned a thing or two. I’ve been an HR buyer for 24,000 employees, Consultant/agent, Insurance Underwriter, Plan data analyst, Operations Auditor, and more.
I want to return to healthcare while Robert Kennedy Jr leads the transformation. Healthcare needs improvement because as I see it, there’s never been “innovation” in a system that is built to resist innovation.
Greed, the profit motive is prioritized over patients, and that’s not good for anyone.
>> My Journey
The truth about the barriers and struggles in healthcare are hidden in plane sight. Customers have taught me to look past the marketing and PR buz and narrative.
After thousands of employee meetings it seems impossible that others don’t see the necessary changes. But, anyone who knows me knows I’ve had this challenge before me since starting my career in 1986. Challenging the status quo has been, is, and will forever be what defines me.
>> Healthcare is not a system
Healthcare is called a system but it’s not one. Healing illnesses and injuries and paying premiums is what we call healthcare. Separate from healthcare is health.
Healthcare is what we do when something is broken and needs healing, it’s what we pay premiums to cover.
Health is what we do to take care of ourselves from top to bottom. The world can be tough and requires each of us to stay mentally alert, physically strong, emotionally available, and to feed our souls the good things God offers us.
God planned for each of us to be healthy and holy – he wants us healthy and happy. But, in this broken world honor, power, wealth and pleasure can upset our daily living. Health is the new frontier.
>> Reality and Science
Unfortunately, there has been a growing distrust with organizations that should provide information that helps us to maintain health and grow in healthy ways.
Being curious and asking questions is a first step in scientific thinking. Lean thinking always explores what’s true now, first. In this way, you can determine where you want to go next.
I’ve argued for decades that because healthcare is not a “system” that there is no innovation. I hope to bring together thousands of covered lives to demonstrate the power of innovation that’s been ignored up to now.
I believe and have faith that my fellow Americans want what’s good for each other – that God’s message to put others first is an easy message. I’m 100% in agreement with the current administration, they’re asking the questions necessary to begin making change.
Timing is everything and now is that time for change.
>> Figures, Lies, and Liars
Stories will inform the future of healthcare and more importantly our health.
I will provide stories from the field that cover patients, physicians, insurance executives, labor unions & management counterparts, government, and others.
A quick example, fifteen years ago, working for a Union showed me the value of Lean thinking. It’s where I first heard about lean. We made many small continuous improvements that overtime lowered healthcare costs. Management got in the way and disagreed, but the Actuaries agreed our trends were negative. Now, that’s something everyone can embrace! But, why didn’t management?
Look for this and other real stories to help you see the future together.
>> Agents Carry the Message
We will be shrinking the cost of healthcare for small businesses like I have proven how to do.
We know premiums and costs are a problem and we’ll be shrinking costs for small businesses that sign up their benefit plans to use our 4 Your Benefit LLC services.
If we want the revolution to be successful we need to have proof-of-concept. By joining forces with other small businesses we can prove our lean Scientific-Thinking small continuous improvements work.
Critical size is 10,000 lives or about 3,500 enrolled contracts. The quicker we get to this size the quicker we can show the world what good looks like the sooner every American can benefit.
Actuaries are all about mathematical proof, and I know because I’ve done it before we can do this. Join us.
>> Customer Focus
It’s a reality rooted in customer first thinking.
It means removing barriers that exist between patient and physician. It embraces scientific thinking, data-driven decisions, and a deep commitment to fixing what’s broken for patients.
It means removing barriers that exist between patient and physician. It embraces scientific thinking, data-driven decisions, and a deep commitment to fixing what’s broken for patients.
I’m expanding our capability to deliver policies through 4 Your Benefit, and adding a Lean community of problem solvers, plus adding individual health coaching using the Kata Scientific Thinking to improve individual health.Transparency Isn’t Just a Buzzword
- First, introduce the idea via the standard agent sales methods to talk to and enroll as many individuals and small groups to build a measurable group for success in order to stop premium increases now.
- Second, teach agents a new skill by providing them cutting edge transparent tools to Coach health. This is a simply extension of an agents existing sales skill set. Utilizing Kata-Scientific-Thinking to question ideas and learn new ways of testing alongside the agent who will offer traditional health ideas and alternative ideas for individuals to think about. Fundamentally, I believe health is about informed choice – everyone is different and yet the same.
>> Future
I’m excited to share and grow this perspective and need partners of all kinds to make this happen.

America’s Health Activist
The beginnings of a book that is a collection of posts and more current writings. The goal back in 2014 when it was drafted was to accumulate some weight around the broken thinking that has continued to plague the health-business.
It’s frightening that in a country so wealthy that we accept such poor health.
And, this White Paper is not less relevant today but more relevant.
Enjoy,
Don’s Archive of Posts
This is a PDF of posts that are were published in the past. Many of them were to highlight the errors of “ObamaCare.” In March of 2010 famously, Ms Pelosi said “she didn’t have to read a bill.” It was a bill that caused chaos in healthcare and didn’t lower premium and didn’t cover more people.
Enjoy this history lesson, there a collection of thoughts and jottings over a few year period. It didn’t seem right to delete them as Don closed “BenStaff.”
